Fear of Failure

Fear of failure is something that most people feel at some point in their life. It can help to think less about “what if I fail” and more about “what if I succeed?”

You Don’t Feel Like a “Real” Entrepreneur

Literally anybody can be an entrepreneur these days. Businesses are easier than ever to start thanks to all the technology and information out there. You don’t have to be a born entrepreneur to launch a business.

If you’re feeling one of the above fears as you’re in the first steps of launching your business, don’t worry. We can work through that using the steps below.

5 Steps to Overcome the Fear of Launching a Business

1. Know Your “Why”

When facing your fear of starting a new business or side hustle, it’s helpful to remember the reason that you started. Take a few minutes to really think through your why so you can use that as a foundation then it can help you to push through your fears.

Did you want to make more money?

Be able to work remotely and travel the world?

Be your own boss?

Remember your motivations. write them on a post-it. Follow others on Instagram that have done it. Write your goals in a journal. Even if it’s not something you regularly do, just grab a notebook or open a new document on your computer and commit to writing for just 10 minutes about why you want to launch this business. Let your thoughts flow naturally, there’s no need for perfection.

2. Identify your fears

Some of the most common fears are listed above. What are your fears? Write them down and then take a look at the best and worst-case scenarios. If your fear is of failing, then what is the worst thing that can happen if you fail? You try again.

Now, look at the best-case scenarios. If you don’t fail what will that mean for you? Success, pride, more money, freedom? More often than not the worst-case scenario won’t happen and even when it does you have a lot of experience when you come out of it.

3. Make a plan

A plan will help you to feel more in control. When fear starts to take over and you want to stop, you will have set steps in place to follow that will help you push through your fears.

Creating a step by step plan for starting your business will give you a guide to move forward even when you’re feeling fearful.

However, be realistic with your expectations. Starting a business can be a rollercoaster ride with many highs and lows. Don’t set crazy expectations for yourself.  You need to think of your strategy and prepare a plan, and then stick with these plans.

4. Just do the work

Sometimes what’s best is to just focus on doing the work. If you have a plan in place and you’re finding yourself constantly blocked by fear, just focus on doing the work. One thing you can do to get past your fear is to pretend you’re working for someone else. You would just show up and do the work.

5. Ask for help

While many of us have a hard time doing it, it’s ok to ask for help. Whether it’s asking for the help of a friend or family member or hiring someone to help you design your website. You don’t have to personally handle every aspect of launching your business.  Don’t try and become a website developer, a copywriter and a graphic designer. It will slow you down, become very frustrating and derail you from your larger objective. There are many people that can help with these tasks. Put aside a budget and spend it wisely when needed.

Starting a new business is always going to be a little scary. Overcoming the fear of launching a new business can be done with a little planning and a mindset shift. In the end, no matter where your new business goes you will likely come out of it with a new set of skills and experience.
